The first baby afghan/blanket I ever made!

I always knew there was an artist hidden in me somewhere. My dad always used to say that I should study arts but my brother thought differently. He pushed me towards math and science and I became a software engineer. Not that I regret HIS decision. I earn a decent living now, thanks to him and now have the luxury to spend a fortune on any kind of arts I decide to pursue which is super cool. Of the many retirements plans I have, this is one of them, pursue my interest in arts.

Now that I made it a point, let me support my statement with a few reminiscences from the past :)  In my school my friends used to exchange greeting cards for New Year's. I was scared to ask my mom for money so I ended my making my own. We used to get a few greeting cards from friends and family, I used to save them, take out of the inlet and use the blank greeting to my heart's content to create my own. Since the envelope had our address and stamps on it, I used to create my own envelope. I always saved the rakhis I tied to my brother. I used to take out the different parts used in that small rakhi, use some dried (book pressed) leaves and flowers and design my own creation with those parts on a greeting card and write a small message. I was extremely proud of those small creations.

Of the very few movies I watched I always thought it is a MUST for any pregnant woman to make a baby blanket or some crochet item for her baby. Well, the time has come in 2004. I planned to make a blanket. I learnt crochet from my mom during my 5th grade summer vacation, who is a great artist in her own way. But obviously I forgot since I never did it again. I grew up as a nerd focusing on academics completely do you can imagine.

I was in LA visiting my aunt and I told her to help me out to make a baby blanket. She showed me her unfinished baby items (her kids are all grown up by then). She bought me some yarn and she introduced me to one of her friends. We all went to attend a vedic conference where I sat with her (Padma) and she tought me the basic V stitch in crochet. It was an all day event, we both sat at the back seats and finished a wash cloth sized blanket :)

It came out really well. I delivered 2 weeks before my due date and finished the last 2 lines in the hospital under epidural :) I passed out for a few hours after delivering my boy and my husband wrapped him with this blanket as his first piece of clothing which was adorable :)

Here are the pics:

Now coming to the making of the blanket, here is a link to the crochet pattern. http://crochet.about.com/od/crochetstitches/ss/Lacy_V_Stitches_10.htm

I made this blanket in 2004 during which time I hardly knew online browsing for resources :) Times have changed now and you can as well find a how to video in youtube.
